The Power of “With”: Why Being Present Is at the Heart of God’s Design
We love.
We hate.
We hope.
We work.
We rest.
These are powerful, one-syllable words that shape our humanity. But there’s another small word that may determine the depth of our suffering or joy more than any of them:
With.
We were made for with.
From the very beginning, God looked at Adam and said, “It is not good for man to be alone.” (Genesis 2:18). This wasn’t just about marriage—it was about design. God exists eternally in relationship: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. So when He made us in His image, He made us to thrive in presence, connection, community.
In our modern world, we’ve become great at doing things for people. We serve, we donate, we send thoughts and prayers. But being with someone—especially in their suffering, especially when it’s inconvenient or uncomfortable—that’s when we reflect God most clearly.
God Is With Us
The story of Scripture is not just about laws, miracles, or doctrines. It’s the story of God stepping into our mess, walking with us, sitting with us, grieving with us, celebrating with us.
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel (which means, God with us).”
— Matthew 1:23
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God.”
— Isaiah 41:10
“Be strong and courageous…for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
— Joshua 1:9
“And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
— Matthew 28:20
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me…”
— Psalm 23:4
God’s “withness” is not dependent on circumstances. It doesn’t falter in pain. In fact, Romans 8 tells us that nothing—not life, death, powers, or anything else in all creation—can separate us from His love.
We Are Called to Be With Others
To be a follower of Jesus is to take His model of presence seriously. If we claim to follow Him but avoid being with others—especially in suffering or struggle—then we’ve missed something essential.
“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”
— Galatians 6:2
“Two are better than one…For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow.”
— Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
“Encourage one another and build one another up…”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:11
“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
— Philippians 2:4
God’s design is not for isolation. In joy and in sorrow, presence matters. A silent companion in grief, a laugh shared around a table, a shoulder offered in crisis—these are sacred. These are divine. These are holy echoes of a God who is always near.
Being With Is Being Like God
When we choose to be with others—in quality time, in deep presence, in the good and the hard—we don’t just offer support. We offer something profoundly spiritual. We reflect the heart of a God who came down to walk among us.
Jesus didn’t just teach from afar—He sat, touched, wept, and stayed. With was His way.
So today, don’t underestimate the sacredness of presence. A coffee shared, a hand held, a phone call made, a moment of stillness next to someone who feels forgotten.
Thank you to all those who have always been with me. You are the closest person to Jesus I have ever known.
This is where heaven meets earth. This is what we were made for. This is “with.”
