Relationship with God
For the Christian, the idea that God desires a relationship with you is both deeply humbling and profoundly life-changing. It means that the infinite, holy, and all-powerful Creator of the universe is not distant or indifferent—but personally interested in you, pursuing you with love, and inviting you into real, ongoing communion with Himself.
Here’s what that means in practice:
1. God Initiates the Relationship
The Christian story isn’t about people climbing up to God—it’s about God coming down to us.
“We love because he first loved us.”
— 1 John 4:19
From the very beginning (in Eden), God walked with humans. Even after sin broke that fellowship, He made a way—ultimately through Jesus—to restore the relationship.
2. It’s Not Religion, It’s Relationship
Christianity isn’t just about following rules or performing rituals—it’s about knowing God personally.
“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”
— John 17:3
Knowing God isn’t just intellectual—it’s relational. It includes trust, love, communication, and presence.
3. God Wants You Near, Not Just Obedient
Yes, obedience matters—but it flows out of relationship, not fear or duty. God wants your heart, not just your behavior:
“I no longer call you servants… Instead, I have called you friends.”
— John 15:15
God desires intimacy—a connection built on love, honesty, and mutual delight.
4. The Relationship Changes You
Being in relationship with God transforms your identity and character. You’re not just a follower—you’re:
- A child (Galatians 4:6)
- A friend (John 15:15)
- A bride (Ephesians 5:25–27, Revelation 19:7)
- A dwelling place of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19)
You’re no longer alone, forgotten, or unloved. You’re chosen and held.
5. Relationship Means Ongoing Interaction
God speaks through Scripture, through His Spirit, through other believers. Christians respond through prayer, worship, obedience, and trust.
“Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.”
— James 4:8
This is not a one-time decision—it’s a living relationship that grows over a lifetime.
6. You Don’t Have to Earn It
The relationship is a gift of grace, not a reward for performance.
“By grace you have been saved through faith… it is the gift of God.”
— Ephesians 2:8
God doesn’t want a polished version of you—He wants the real you. He invites you as you are, and loves you enough not to leave you there.
7. Relationship Leads to Joy and Purpose
The more a Christian walks with God, the more they discover who they are and why they’re here:
“In your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”
— Psalm 16:11
God’s desire for relationship gives life meaning, direction, and deep, lasting peace.
In Summary
For the Christian, the fact that God desires a relationship means:
- You are wanted.
- You are invited, not just tolerated.
- You can know God, not just know about Him.
- Your life has a center—and that center is Love Himself.
